Chapter 96 - Highs and Lows

Hermione had the twins by caesarean section at the hospital and Freya helped her carry them to the car.

Much like Freya's twins, Hermione's little babies were opposites. One had very dark skin and the other was very fair, but unlike Freya's they were both little girls.

The dark skinned baby they named Lavendar.

The light skinned baby they called Hannah.

Owen's fears for Martha were happily never to come to anything. At long last Martha was pregnant. Now she often visited Dominic and Hermione's to see the little twins, full of anticipation for her turn. In fact the first scan had revealed that Martha was also carrying twins.

Owen was glad to see her so happy again and relieved that at last they were to produce a River family heir. On that head he chatted to Martha one day. He had seen a shadow pass her face sometimes when she was asked whether she wanted to find out the sex of the babies and Owen thought he knew why. One night he was dancing with her in the drawing room when he said,

"I have come up with another new improvement. I think the oldest child should be the heir to the next generation rather than the oldest male, what do you think?"

"Are you sure?" asked Martha wide eyed.

"Yes, it is time for a change. Whether you are carrying a boys or girls, the oldest will lead the family after me."

Martha hugged him tight, now her heart as light as a feather, it had been the only thing that had marred the happiness she had felt the last few months.

Sadly, the happiness was not destined to last. Freya wasn't to get to meet Owen's little ones. Siddhartha was the one who had found her dead and all the family were plunged into grief.

Freya has seemed so well and everything had looked so rosy for the future. Now along with all the exciting baby items, there were echoes of Freya around the house. Including the last painting she had been working on and was never destined to finish.

Soon however Martha's time had come and everyone's thoughts were on the new little people about the join the family.
