Chapter 97 - The New Heir

Owen cradled the next River family heir in his arms.

He felt so happy to be a father. At one point he had wondered if he would ever be a parent, but now he had twins.

In the end it had been the fair skinned little girl who was first to be born. Martha chose the name Lizzie, Lizzie was her favourite Jane Austen heroine. Martha hoped she would grow up to be as feisty and independent as her namesake.

They named their dark skinned little boy, Henry.

The next River family heir would be a woman. Owen wondered how she would find leading the family. He didn't envisage her sex being any problem. Although they dressed Victorian the wider River family were all up to date and used to both male and female leaders.

With the birth of his own two little ones and the death of his mother, family became all important to Owen.

Martha had also wanted to reconnect with her family after the birth of the twins. Life had been so busy she had hardly seen her brothers in years and her she had fallen out with her Mum, when she had married again after her father's early death.

Now however mother and daughter were reconciled and Martha was going about reaching out to her brother's as well.

Martha's youngest brother Planet had just become a father and this fact really brought them together.

Dominic and Hermione's little twins were now toddlers, moving around the place and into everything.

Owen and Martha now liked to throw family parties. These were a lot of fun and often involved lots of silly dancing.

Owen was very happy, but as is always there way there was one thing that was worrying him.

His father Merlin, had been hit hard by his wife's death. He had started doing slightly odd things. One day he took his guitar and spent the day busking at the local market.

Another day he swore that he had sat down to breakfast and the ghost of Laughing Bear had come and spoke to him.

Owen was worried the strain of losing his wife might be too much for Merlin and hoped it wouldn't lead to his own early death.
