Chapter 71 - Like Mother like Daughter

Merlin had been rather worried by Marie Curie's behaviour, she was turning out to be the black sheep of the River family.

She was now pregnant with her third child. Not married and her first two children's had a father who had no wish for any contact.

Merlin as leader of the family felt responsible for their well being and comfort. Marie Curie as an adult was free to do as she saw fit, but Merlin couldn't help but look on concerned.

They were used to Marie Curie's wild behaviour, but there was surprise all round when it was her mother Melody who made the next starling announcement.

Melody had lost her husband of many years, the year before and had been heartbroken.

She was now ninety two and so it was completely unexpected when she announced that she was going to be married again and her new husband Melvin Suggs was considerably younger than her only in his fifties, although he had aged very well.

Merlin felt that he must be a gold digger to be going after such a rich old lady and he tried to point this out to Melody as politely as possible, but she wouldn't listen.

Melvin and Melody were married and he moved in with her and Einstein and pregnant Nichole.

Charli went round to meet the newly married couple and was surprised to find how friendly and chatty Melvin was. Within ten minutes she felt as if she had known him all her life and found herself laughing away at all his jokes, she even felt rather jealous Melody has snagged such a lovely man.

Merlin wondered what other announcements might be just around the corner. He felt that perhaps it reflected on him as a poor leader. Both Laughing Bear and Albin his father had been stocky and muscular and had a definite presence in any room they were in.

Merlin had always felt rather weedy by comparison, as he had inherited his mother's slight build.

He wondered if his leadership skills were lacking and leading to these problems. His wife Freya pointed out to him that there were now a lot of people in the River family and that as it grew larger and larger there was more chance of having a few rogue members, it was just statistically more likely. Merlin wanted to believe this but still felt as if such things would not have happened in Albin's time.
